Every person's circumstances are unique, depending on the various concern(s) you bring to therapy, you will determine how long you need therapy for. Some engage in therapy for a few weeks, months, or years. You will talk to your therapist to assess your goals and needs at every session.
-
Every mental health therapist is different and although your therapist can diagnose an official mental health diagnosis, some do not. Your therapist can diagnose you based on the information you share with them in order to develop a treatment plan tailored to those concerns. The diagnosis will be discussed collaboratively with you. Most importantly, diagnosing is not the main goal of therapy, treating the symptoms is what you would be working with your therapist on. If a person is using health insurance benefits, your therapist would be required to provide a diagnosis to the insurance company to reimburse services. Keep in mind that the diagnosis may or may not follow your medical history as a pre-existing condition. If you would like to learn more about this, you can speak directly to your therapist.
